Asthma cases have tripled since Covid-19, according to experts, who point out that both intrinsic and extrinsic causes are to blame.

According to Dr. Ajit Singh, a respiratory disease expert and superintendent at RUHS hospital, the intrinsic factors include weakened immunity caused by Covid-19 infections. The extrinsic factors include air pollution and allergens in the air, which trigger asthma and other respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis and CRS. CRS and asthma coexist in many circumstances, making patients lives even more difficult.

ENT doctors believe treating CRS may reduce the need for steroids in asthma management. Dr. Satish Jain, a private hospital head, said bronchial asthma is more common in patients with CRS, a common upper airway disease characterized by inflammation of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Asthma severity is reduced when CRS is treated.

Dr. Jain further stated that the upper airways and sinuses should be evaluated since disease mediators in the upper and lower airways are the same. The condition is usually caused by eosinophils and cytokines found in the upper and lower airways.

Dr. BB Sharma, senior professor of medicine and director of the allergy and respiratory disorders section at SMS Hospital, said that allergy and asthma cases are rising after a brief decline. Aside from house dust allergy, Holoptelea tree pollen allergy is becoming more common.
